Location: Big Lake WMA--Mallard Lake
Observation date: 10/6/09

For all you West Tn birders thinking about the Red Phalarope in NE Arkansas.

Notes: Went looking for the Red Phalarope that was seen here on Sat, Sun
and Mon. I struck out even with perfect/exact directions and coords. I
walked the area reported 4 times and could not find the Phalarope. Expanded
the search on foot an additional 100 yds each direction and then sat with
the scope for a while during a brief rain shower. Then decided to drive half
the distance around the lake until blocked by construction equipment at
north end. Waiting this many days since first sighting was a stretch at best
for a chance at this bird. Raining on arrival, skies cleared (water stopped
falling) for my walk but sent me back to the cover of the van after 45min of
searching. Lots of Grt Egrets scattered throughout the 300 acre impoundment.
DC Cormorants roosting in a row of cypress midlake. Lots of
truck/construction traffic on the east side of lake on CR305. Lone Solitary
SP was only shorebird encountered.

Number of species: 11

Double-crested Cormorant 175+

Great Blue Heron 29

Great Egret 155+

Solitary Sandpiper 1
