17 Tennessee birders crossed the mighty Mississippi River this morning as TOS Memphis found dry ground across the river. This NWR sits dead across the river from our own Meeman-Shelby Forest St Park (parts that which are under water) here in Shelby county. Location: Wapanocca NWR Observation date: 4/20/08 Notes: 17 hikers joined together today for a spring bird count of Wappanoca NWR in Turrell Ark. Bird of the day was the American Bittern. Woods were teeming with birds. Red-headed Woodpeckers in good numbers through each of the forested areas we walked. Bald Eagle seen on the lake perched and then flying above us. Eagle Nest latter seen however empty.
