Sightings Report, 1st half of March, Peterson Lake Nature Center Area,Collierville, Shelby Cty 35 species seen in three outings this month alone. New boardwalk at the Peterson Lake Nature Center, is now open all the way to the Wolf River. This ¾ of a mile boardwalk meanders through bottomland hardwood forest, and sloughs and swamp before turning back once it reaches the river. The Nature center is located in the WC Johnson Park, (Better known for ballfields) at the Northern end of Byhalia Rd east of the intersection with Wolfriver Blvd. Location: TN 1 Cvll, Peterson Lake Nature Center Observation date: 3/3/07 Notes: Boardwalk was blocked today from the bridge onward so they could tie in the new boardwalk. Stayed up front in the woods and parking/picnic area under the trees and birded. Flock of 200+ Cedar Waxwings came in feeding, bathing, drinking in the low areas. Lots of pictures. Berry eating birds making a mess though. Number of species: 19 Canada Goose 2 Mallard 4 Turkey Vulture 1 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-headed Woodpecker 3 Downy Woodpecker 3 Blue Jay 1 Carolina Chickadee 5 Tufted Titmouse 3 Brown Creeper 1 Carolina Wren 2 Eastern Bluebird 3 American Robin 22 Brown Thrasher 1 Cedar Waxwing 200 Eastern Towhee 1 Swamp Sparrow 4 White-throated Sparrow 6 Location: TN 1 Cvll, Peterson Lake Nature Center Observation date: 3/13/07 Notes: Warm day, a little rain threatning. Boardwalk is 99.99% completed(some benches need to be installed) and open for all to use. New Boardwalk (phase two of Peterson Lake Nature Center)is approx 3/4 mile to the Wolf river. Lots of birds available just after getting out of the car in the parking lot and walking to the first bridge of the old section of boardwalk. Only bad thing about this boardwalk is all the people enjoying it. Hikers are great but the kids on bikes and blades have to go. Todays highlights are 6 of the seven woodpeckers (No Hairy today) Pileated was a good show today as two were real low on the ground and on down timber. Two Barred Owls were heard calling to each other. Pileated Wp's are all around. Seems like 3 pair have a run of the area. One pair up near the entrance/bridge,and the other two further in and around the end of the trail near the river view. Kids and Bikes making it hard to bird.
