Sightings Report 17 July Ensley Bottoms, The Pits Shelby County Lunch time romp through the Pits, Unlike Monday Couldn't find a duck to save my life. 60+ Canada Geese though. Black-necked stilts still scattered over the different ponds and lagoons. A lot of gangly chicks tromping around in the open now. Hard to count the shorebirds since they were up every once in awhile before settling down. Both main pits had a lot of birds in them. All the other wet areas including the big western area had good numbers of birds 2500+ shorebirds. Least Sandpipers most plentiful. Killdeer everywhere, Several Semipalmated SP mixed in along with a Bunch of Pectoral SP. Four Spotted Sp seen in the big area NW of the crane. 3 Stilt SP on pond five and several L Yellowlegs scattered amongst the flocks. Bobwhite Quail running the levee's. A hummingbird kept busy just above the tall(6ft) weeds. Dickcissel, RW Blkbirds, Starlings and Mo Doves and Barn Swallows rounded out the usual locals. One lone Great Egret seen. Some of the areas getting hard to view due to the weeds getting taller than the SUV windows. Will try again tomorrow for the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.
