Today, taking my grandson to feed the ducks at Shutes Branch Recreation Area on
Old Hickory Lake in Hermitage, Tn, Davidson County, I saw the following birds:

Mallards- 30
Ring-Billed Gulls- 30
American Coots- 5 some clucking and making chicken noises
Eastern Bluebirds- 2
Great Blue Herons- 4
Canada Geese- 5
Blue-Winged Teal- 2 (Highlight of the day for me)
American Crow- 3 One stole a fish from a gull
Belted Kingfisher- 1
Melanistic/Hybrid Mallards- 3

The Great Blue Herons were perched in the trees on a small island about 150 -
200 yards north of the eastern end of the Recreation Area. I have always seen
clusters of Great Blue Herons and Black-Crowned Night Herons on this island and
suspect it might be a roost or even a rookery.
