At noon today, just after a strong storm, I decided even though mid day it
might be a good time
to briefly check Cove Lake State Park (Campbell County, TN) There was a brief
hour of cooler temperatures in which birds usually sing again this time of year
after the recent weather conditions.
Since we have not had a lot of rain recently, I also knew there should be some
"exposed" mudflat areas there that are not usually present.
Quite a few birds were active in the back parking lot, though nothing unusual
until I walked down to
the wildlife observation deck. There were, as I'd hoped quite a bit of mudflats
exposed.
I immediately noted 2 large shorebirds feeding in a "Dowitcher" manner apx. 150
feet away.
They were quickly identified as Short-Billed Dowitchers as they flew when being
harassed by several
Killdeer in the area. They landed even closer to me. More info- complete
description on ebird . (Cove Lake is a designated hot spot)
As an update 5:30 pm Thurs. afternoon... Heavy downpours this afternoon in the
area have most likely covered the mudflat area at observation deck with runoff..
If they are NOT in the area of observation tower I suggest scoping the distant
West side of the lake from the fishing dock) There should be small areas of
mudflats/ sandbars not underwater yet..
