September 4, 2004 Rankin Wildlife Management Area (Cocke Co., TN) I spent about three and a half hours at Rankin today during midday and early afternoon and recorded several noteworthy species. The water levels are down a bit compared to those of last weekend, but the mudflats still are quite a way off. A scope and patience are essential. Most of my viewing was done from two points: the road near the tipple, and the railroad track margin at the point where the entrance road crosses the track. This latter point offers much better views, but the amount of area visible from this point is more limited. Here's a list of the most memorable finds: Double-crested Cormorant (11); Great Blue Heron (21); Great Egret (47); Green Heron (10); Black-crowned Night-Heron (7); Canada Goose (157); Mallard (14); Wood Duck (10); Killdeer (60); Semipalmated Plover (3); Greater Yellowlegs; Lesser Yellowlegs (5); Solitary Sandpiper; Spotted Sandpiper; Western Sandpiper (2); Semipalmated Sandpiper (12); Least Sandpiper (12); Pectoral Sandpiper (13); Stilt Sandpiper (4); Short-billed Dowitcher (2); Buff-breasted Sandpiper (3); Osprey; Ruby-throated Hummingbird; Eastern Kingbird (5); Northern Rough-winged Swallow (17); White-eyed Vireo (6); Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (3); Brown Thrasher; Common Yellowthroat; Wilson's Warbler (in the willows along the shore where the entrance road crosses the track); Indigo Bunting (2).
