March 27, 2008 Shelby Farms Shelby Co. TN Yesterday, a run through the park yielded, 3 Upland Sandpipers, right on time. These birds always show up at this location first ( most likely I just watch for them here first), they are fore runners of the protracted migration of these elegant prairie birds. Last week, a few small flocks of American Golden-Plovers were seen along with Pectoral Sandpipers in the flooded areas of the fields but yesterday, I witness a mid-day weather related fallout of the following: American Golden-Plovers - 3 locations 45 birds, many new and resident Killdeer, 4 Greater Yellowlegs, 7 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Solitary Sandpiper right on time for an early bird, 7 Least Sandpiper, 2 Baird's (these birds trickle through early and have a very prolonged migration pattern), 230+ Pectoral Sandpipers, 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, my earliest date before was March 19, a few of these birds wander early while now most of our early dowitchers are Long-billed as they are wintering just south of Memphis in the MS Delta in great numbers, and 81 Wilson's Snipe. Ten species and counting. You gotta love them Wind Birds.............. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
