Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture Coordinated Shorebird Counts 10-11 August and 14-15 September 2002 For the past three years, biologists and birders like yourself have participated in coordinated shorebird counts aimed at increasing our understanding of shorebird populations and habitat needs in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley and West Gulf Coastal Plain regions (MAV/WGCP). In 2002, the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture will again organize a volunteer-based coordinated survey to inventory shorebird populations utilizing the MAV/WGCP. These "snapshots" of population distribution and abundance will be combined with data being collected through research projects (e.g., turnover rate [University of Arkansas] and food density [University of Memphis] across several locations and habitat types to ensure adequate habitat is being provided for birds migrating through the MAV/WGCP during fall migration. As you prepare for another southward shorebird migration season, please consider lending your interest and expertise to ongoing monitoring efforts in the MAV/WGCP. Dates for this year's counts will be 10-11 August and 14-15 September. We ask that you count on at least one of the two days for each month. However, as the accuracy of the data increases with each observation, we urge you to report data from all of your shorebird outings. Remember to report sites with zero birds, for this is important information in terms of analyzing distributions across the landscape. Data entry can be accomplished directly through the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture web site (www.lmvjv.org/shorebird). This database is intended to: (1) assist researchers and conservation planners in establishing biologically based conservation objectives that ensure adequate habitat for shorebirds; as well as to (2) provide the birding community a web-based resource for sharing shorebird information. For those who entered data last year, look for new editing and querying capabilities on the web site. If success can be measured by the number of sites surveyed (n = 134) then this monitoring effort has already been extremely successful. However, to reap the full benefit of these efforts we need to continue and expand our monitoring efforts. As such, we ask that you continue to monitor existing sites as well as to look for new areas to count. Thanks in advance for your support! Sincerely, R.
