Hi Folks
Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge is located in eastern Knox Co, follow the signs
after exiting I-40 at the Midway Rd. exit. Complete directions are on the TOS
website.
Our banding session on Sunday October 26 was part of a continuing effort to
band year round at the refuge. We're using six nets and open before sunrise
and usually quit about 11:00. At our current location in the refuge we band in
and along a hedgerow near the river and in cuts into the warm season grasses.
On the 26th we banded 57 birds plus had 3 recaptures. Banded birds include
carolina chickadee 4, ruby-crowned kinglet 2, american goldfinch 9, field
sparrow 1, swamp sparrow 18, song sparrow 17, savannah sparrow 2, white-crowned
sparrow 2, carolina wren 1 and northern cardinal 1. This was the first of
season captures for kinglets, swamp sparrow, savannah sparrow and white-crowns.
During our previous sessions from August, September and early October we banded
a nice selection of birds. The refuge habitat is most suitable for grassland
birds and we get a lot of indigo buntings, field sparrows, song sparrows and
common yellowthroats. In that period we also banded small numbers of palm
warblers, magnolia warblers, tennessee warblers, a few redstarts and a
lincoln's sparrow. It is always interesting to see what shows up at the
refuge. Our next scheduled sessions are Nov. 9 and 23.
