On Friday morning (April 10) I spent 5 hours birding at the refuge in east Knox County, east Tennessee (Exit 402 off I-40). It turned out to be a great day to look for birds there. We'll have to schedule field trips there in early April next year. Sparrows were very well represented, with 10 species! Temp 42-68 deg F 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Here's the list: Double-crested Cormorant 17 Great Blue Heron 5. Three nests seen on an island in the French Broad River. Black-crowned Night-Heron 2 (not commonly seen here) Canada Goose 17, most in pairs Mallard 2 (male/female) Blue-winged Teal 8 Turkey Vulture 11 Osprey 1 (still no sign of interest in the nesting platform erected a couple years ago) N Harrier 1 Cooper's Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Am Kestrel 1 Wild Turkey 1 N Bobwhite 10 Mourning Dove 3 Belted Kingfisher 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 5 Downy Wp 1 N Flicker 4 E Phoebe 2 Purple Martin 1 (none seen at martin house erected a month or two ago) Tree Swallow 5 (at martin house) N Rough-winged Swallow 5 (may be nesting on cliffs across river) Barn Swallow 4 (nesting in barn) Blue Jay 0 Am Crow 3 (actually uncommon at this location!) Carolina Chickadee 5 Tufted Titmouse 8 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Carolina Wren 12 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 11 E Bluebird 9 (nesting in a pole) Am Robin 26 N Mockingbird 4 Brown Thrasher 6 Eur Starling 16 Yellow-rumped Warbler 11 Palm Warbler 5 Scarlet Tanager 1 N Cardinal 33 E Towhee 15 Chipping Sparrow 1 Field Sp 56 Vesper Sp 5 Savannah Sp 9 Song Sp 16 Lincoln's Sp 1 Swamp Sp 32 White-throated Sp 36 White-crowned Sp 76 (numbers keep growing every time I go there! This has become a major wintering place for these sparrows) Red-winged Blackbird 35 E Meadowlark 3 Brown-headed Cowbird 17 (these were following birds everywhere!)
