Hi Folks In addition to doing MAPS during the summer we have been banding all winter at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge located in east Knox County. To get to Seven Islands just follow the signs after taking the Midway road exit off I-40 going east from Knoxville. Our last two sessions were on March 20 and March 23 so this is a combined report from the two sessions. Our results were 2 Brown Thrashers, 2 Carolina Wrens, 1 Palm Warbler, 1 Eastern Towhee, 6 Swamp Sparrows, 3 Song Sparrows, 1 White-crowned Sparrow, 2 White-throated Sparrows, 10 Field Sparrows and 5 Savannah Sparrows. We had three recaptures of Field Sparrows, two were banded in the summer of 2007 as youngsters and one banded last fall on Nov. 4 also as a youngster. In addition to banding we bird between net runs and had lots of Double-crested Cormorants on the river in addition to hundreds of Tree Swallows and a scattering of Barn Swallows and Rough-winged Swallows. Other birds we saw were an Osprey and Wood Ducks. Red-winged Blackbirds have been claiming territories since the end of February and Purple Martins were seen over the fields and perched on top of their gourds. Seven Islands is a nice place to bird with grassy trails through the fields and a paved road (no cars) through the middle to make walking really dry and easy.
