[TN-Bird] Sequatchie Valley (Bledsoe Co.): Sc.-t. Flycatchers, Dickcissel, Bl.-cr. Night-Heron, Ring-necked Duck, etc. July 10, 2010

Steve Stedman and I birded the Sequatchie Valley in Bledsoe County this 
morning into early afternoon and found a few notable birds. Here is Steve's 
ebird list. The Scissor-tailed Flycatchers were dispersing, though the 7 
birds were only found in the usual locations.

(Also we easily found the male Dickcissel at Shadow Mt. Estates in 
Cumberland Co. [we didn't wait for the female to appear] and heard a/the 
Willow Flycatcher along nearby Dunbar Rd. again.)

Observation date:     7/10/10
Notes:   Weather foggy early then clearing and quite hot (most of last 4 
hours at 90 degrees or a bit more).
Number of species:     72

Canada Goose     55     30 at pond near Walter Miller Curve on Old Rt. 28 
(south of Ninemile Crossroad); 25 at pond on Kelly Lane.
Wood Duck     1     Also 2 young.
Mallard     5     Probably largish young from local brood.
Ring-necked Duck     1     Male well-scoped at pond near Walter Miller Curve 
on Old Rt. 28.
Northern Bobwhite     4
Great Blue Heron     1
Great Egret     1     T. A. Swafford Rd., now posted; bird seen at distance 
flying in to one of the ponds.
Green Heron     5
Black-crowned Night-Heron     1     Adult at pond on Upper East Valley Rd. 
near intersection with Robbnett Rd.; probably first county record .
Black Vulture     4
Turkey Vulture     6
Cooper's Hawk     1
Red-tailed Hawk     1
Killdeer     10
Lesser Yellowlegs     1     Pond on Kelly Lane.
Least Sandpiper     2     Pond on Kelly Lane

Eurasian Collared-Dove     5     1 calling at intersection of Old Rd. 28 and 
Melvin Crossroad; 1 north of that intersection on Old Rd. 28 at Faith 
Baptist Church; 3 at farmyard on Upper East Valley Rd. near intersection 
with Old Dayton Rd.
Mourning Dove     30
Yellow-billed Cuckoo     3
Chimney Swift     9
Ruby-throated Hummingbird     2
Belted Kingfisher     2
Red-bellied Woodpecker     3
Downy Woodpecker     2
Northern Flicker     1
Pileated Woodpecker     2
Eastern Wood-Pewee     1
Eastern Phoebe     2
Eastern Kingbird     5
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher     7     1 ad. and 3 juveniles on Ninemile 
Crossroad near the traditional nest site (but birds flew in from southeast 
quite a distance away); 1 adult (male) and 1 juvenile at Slaughterhouse Rd. 
(male in fencerow across Rt. 127 from Slaughterhouse Rd.); and 1 ad. 
(probably female) near intersection of Upper East Valley Rd. and Akins Rd. 
(near Swafford Pond).
