Cherokee Dam area
Jefferson and Grainger County
Monday, December 20, 2016
3:30 - 5:10pm
Lola and I visited the Cherokee Dam area to look for the Black Scoters seen by
Morton Massey on Monday. There were not as many ducks present as I had
expected given the cold conditions. We could see a group of ducks in the
middle of the reservoir still in Jefferson County towards the Grainger County
line. David Chaffin drove up and joined us and we walked up the road on the
dam to get a closer look. We found a male Surf Scoter and a female Black
Scoter in a group of ~40 ducks consisting of Greater Scaup, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy
Duck, and Redheads. We also checked the gravel access on the Grainger County
side and saw only a group of Horned Grebes.
