May 12, 2007 Memphis, Shelby Co. TN Checked on all the western bird habitat around Memphis and found some surprises. Western Kingbirds were at three locations; at Ensley, inside the expressway in north Memphis and in Frayser. The Scissor-tailed male was seen hunting about a quarter mile north of the nest site on President's Island, missing the excitement around the nest, as it seems a hybrid (looking like the first breeding female at that site 4 years ago) was having a tussle with the present female resident Scissor-tail? It will be interesting to see who wins out. The last two years a very normal Scissor-tail has ruled the roost at this site, with both birds of the pair chasing off another male that hung around for a while. At Ensley it took quite a few passes to find just a single Western Kingbird, that quickly disappeared over the plant, so there might be a pairing working again this year. A pair of Western Kingbirds was seen off of Watkins in an industrial area where Mike Todd and I found a single bird last year. In Frayser, I located 4 birds, 2 Western Kingbirds and surprisingly 2 of mixed heritage evidently from last years mixed pairing. I have interesting photos of the 2 mixed birds showing slight differences between the two. One of the Western Kingbirds was following the more attractive (;o)) of the two hybrids around. Here we go again!! Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
