Ten observers in 6-7 parties conducted the Savannah CBC today. Weather was
decent, but northeast winds slowed bird activity some. A total of 112 species
was recorded, but one party's data is still unreported. Some sections of the
river bottoms were inaccessible due to river flooding. The best bird of the
day was another late migrant, the apparent trend this year. A Yellow-throated
Vireo was found near the campground below Pickwick Dam. Other highlights
included a Savannah CBC second record Eurasian Wigeon, a Red-thoated Loon, a
Peregrine Falcon and a Gray Catbird. Interesting birds that are more regular on
this CBC include Greater Scaup-51, Sandhill Crane-28, Virginia Rail-2,
Merlin-3, House and Marsh Wrens, Orange-crowned and Palm Warblers, Vesper
Sparrow-22 and Brewer's Blackbird. Misses (unless the last party had them)
included American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Duck, Short-eared Owl, Fish
Crow, American Pipit, Lapland Longspur and LeConte's Sparrow.
Thanks to those who helped this year.
