There were about a dozen Rusty Blackbirds and a few Cowbirds in the trees
behind bench #20 this morning at Radnor Lake. They flew off as I was
showing a Barred Owl to a couple people. The only waterfowl at the west end
were Ruddy, Ring-necked, Mallard, and Canada Geese.
But the highlight of the morning were these strange sounds coming from the
ice on the west part of the lake. I don't know the science of it, but
somehow the combination of the ice and the open areas of water was creating
remarkable and varied "music". Some just short pops, while others were
several seconds of drawn out wails. Some of them reminded me of recordings
of whales, some more like airplanes. A really cool experience. With the
temps warming up today, it probably won't last much longer. I highly
recommend it.
