Willie made his fly-by visit to the feeder at 5:45 this morning and then has been seven more times in the first 10 minutes. None of the visits enabled us to get a good view of his throat but from prior observations we think the molt on the gorget is about complete. Makes us wonder how much longer he will stay here since the first signs of Spring were so evident yesterday. The Red-tailed Hawks mated and began carrying nesting materials across the field at the end of our yard. Two Eastern Phoebes came into the yard and were promptly chased out by some Dark-eyed Juncos. And the little Song Sparrow sang a shortened rendition this morning but he did it from the deck rail and not from Willie's bush - guess he got the message yesterday. But we still have the Winter birds - White-throated Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos, Purple Finches, and for the last few days, a Fox Sparrow. This transition period is a great time. We're in that in-between time with Willie also. We keep trying to prepare for the emotional shock of his leaving and yet at the same time we imagine what it would be like if he stayed until the Ruby-throats arrive (last year it was April 5). How do you think Willie would react to another hummer being at HIS feeder? Facts and feelings are so incompatible when they focus on a little bird that has captivated your life for 105 days.
