Totaled 122 species today on the Reelfoot Lake Christmas Bird Count! This was
our 2nd highest total ever, behind last year's 124 species! I would've never
guessed that we would have broke 120 again. I thought we'd have been lucky to
hit 110 looking at the forecast for today but most of the rain held off until
dark. Warm, windy day with temps plummeting as the rains arrived.
Memorableday - we had a high of 76 degrees & had butterflies, insects, bats,,
snakes, tornado sirens sounding, the fastest drop in temperature that I've ever
experienced, and many great birds!
Best birds were Little Gull, Smith's Longspur, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
White-eyed Vireo, Common Yellowthroat, Marsh Wren, Golden Eagle, &
Black-crowned Night-Heron. I'm sure I'm leaving something out. Only notable
misses were Redhead & Greater Scaup.
Thanks to all 15 birders that participated - Chris Agee, Jerry Drewry, Bob
Foehring, Graham Gerdeman, Mark Greene, Joe Hall, Gail King, Chris Sloan, Ruben
Stoll, Victor Stoll, Joe Stone, Michael Todd, Alan Troyer, Allen Trently, and
Donna Ward.
I'll give a more detailed report later.
Good birding!
