December 20, 1993
The Reelfoot Lake Christmas Bird Count was held on Saturday, December 20th.
Fourteen birders counted 115 species which was 2 below our all-time record of
117 which we tied last year.

Highlights:

Vermillion Flycatcher - still hanging around at the Airpark, a first for the
Reelfoot CBC!
Northern Waterthrush - 4th Reelfoot CBC record, the first since 1980.
Common Yellowthroat - 3 were seen in 3 different locations!

Other highlights included:

Ross's Geese (3), Greater Scaup (22 total species of waterfowl), Common Loon
(9, highest count ever for Reelfoot CBC), American White Pelican, Least
Sandpiper, American Woodcock, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Short-eared Owl, Fish
Crow, Sedge Wren, Marsh Wren, American Pipit, Orange-crowned Warbler (at 2
different locations), Pine Warbler (4 total species of warblers), American Tree
Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, Lapland Longspur, Western
Meadowark (a total of 4 birds were seen at 2 different locations), and Brewer's
Blackbird.

Species seen in very impressive numbers included 20,000+ Ring-billed Gulls
(10,000+ seen in 3 different roosts on the lake and 10,000 seen near the prison
farm) and 100,000 American Robins coming to a roost at dusk near Tiptonville.

I want to thank Jay Desgrosellier, Jerry Drewry, Bob Foehring, Joe Guinn, Ken
Leggett, Don Manning, Nancy Moore, John Noel, Joe Stone, Sabin Thompson, Mike
Todd, Melinda Welton, and Jeff Wilson for their participation and for adding to
another great and successful count at Reelfoot!

Happy Holidays,

Mark Greene
Trenton, TN
