Victor and I had 26 species of shorebirds around this week with 20
species seen at the “Pits” last night and this morning, including
Black-bellied and American Golden Plovers, Upland, Stilt and Western
Sandpiper, RED KNOT, Sanderling, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Long-Billed
Dowitcher and Wilson’s Phalarope.
Additional species not seen at the Pits were a Whimbrel and an American
Avocet at the DRU earlier in the week, Baird’s Sandpiper and American
Woodcock at Rankin yesterday, a Short-Billed Dowitcher at Big Sandy this
afternoon and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE that we saw passing through at Paris
Landing State Park this afternoon. (Seen disappearing to the South up the
Big Sandy River)
13 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were seen in total with 3 at the pits, 2 at
Big Sandy, 5 in Johnsonville, one at the Duck River and two at Rankin
Bottoms.
Also nice were 5 species of Gulls on KY Lake this afternoon with 4 adult
LESSER BLACK-BACKED and a juvenile LAUGHING GULL on the island at Paris
Landing State Park and a juvenile FRANKLIN’S GULL at the Johnsonville
Bridge this evening.
The Whimbrel appeared to be missing on the mudflats at the Duck River
tonight.
