Cades Cove Great Smoky Mountains National Park Blount County, TN June 24, 2006 Hi folks, Today we had some family in town, so we did the unthinkable - we drove Cades Cove on a Saturday in summer! During a major bike rally, no less. But here I am, alive to tell about it. We did a short hike with these non-birding folks. The most notable observation was of a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches at the intersection of Wet Bottom Trail and the driveway to the Elijah Oliver homestead (which is currently closed for major renovation to the grounds. It was a bit confusing, because I heard a Red-breasted, but when I looked up, there was a White-breasted. I assumed that I blew the call, but then heard it again, when I looked only about 2 trees over, there was a male Red-breasted. Then the female flew in. Sadly, we did not have time to look for a possible nest cavity. I believe this site is less than 2000 feet elevation.
