Rankin WMA is managed by TWRA, the property belongs to TVA. About 500 acres of Rankin Bottoms, from the old railroad bed over to the river and north to the railroad bridge is privately owned by shadowy corporation based in Lichtenstein that has refused to discuss selling with TWRA. The property has limited real estate value, since it's subject to TVA flood easement. The Nature Conservancy hasn't followed through on my requests to consider purchasing property adjoining the WMA, perhaps because of their emphasis on resident endangered species. I believe the area has exceptional value as a breeding area for waterbirds and as a stopover for migratory shorebirds - it ought to be expanded and upgraded to wildlife refuge status. Any suggestions for accomplishing those goals would be appreciated. Wonder if that land is something TWRA or The Nature Conservancy would be interested in purchasing. My understanding is that the entire Rankin WMA is merely leased or perhaps even just tended and that the owners could sell it should they so decide. Would be nice to get the whole area truly protected.
