Leslie Gibbens & I will be leading canoe tours of Rankin Bottoms on
Saturday, May 8 at 8:30 & 11:00 A.M. We have a limited number of
canoes, or space on board, available for those who don't have their
own canoe or kayak.
We'll be exploring the riparian edges and interior of the flooded
forest of the the Wildlife Observation Area and neighboring tracts.
The region has a singular swamp-like quality and attracts a wide
variety of birds, and other wildlife. High numbers of great egrets,
green herons, wood ducks, ospreys, cormorants and prothonotary
warblers are the norm. On or about May 8, we typically find 7 or 8
shorebird species; rarities include black-necked stilts and glossy
ibises.

Donations to the Rankin Bottoms Project, which supports activities to
promote careful use and to maintain and improve wildlife habitat in
the area, will be accepted.
