Rankin Bottoms, Cocke county, 4/13/10, 5-8 PM
Douglas Lake elevation: 979 ft. (lakewater now backing into the
bottoms above the coal tipple, roads not yet flooded)

On our first extended trip this spring, we saw most species from the
road, then launched our canoe past the tipple and saw a gathering of 8
eagles at the long shallow cove west of the Leadvale RR trestle, where
the carp were easy picking. Osprey kept coming into view - our count
of 14 was conservative.

Partial list:
Canada goose (70)
Wood duck (10, in 5 pairs)
Blue-winged teal (18)
Double-crested cormorant (180+, in flocks heading to roost on the
Nolichucky)
