Radnor Lake State Natural Area Davidson Co. Nashville, TN 2011 May 17 7:00 - 9:50am partly cloudy and cool On a wonderful cool spring morning I went to Radnor Lake looking for MOURNING WARBLERs and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERs. I found neither. At the beginning of the walk skies were mostly clear, and it was good to see the sun after several very cloudy days. I walked from the west parking lot to Long Bridge and back. On my return walk about 9:15 am before Bench 16 and the deck I heard a CONNECTICUT WARBLER give part of its song next to the trail. Over the next 5 minutes it sang a couple more times and then popped into a cedar tree next to the trail. During the next 5-6 minutes I watched it preen and look around, relaxed on its perch only 20 feet from me. It completely ignored me as I drank in the view. Finally, it flew behind the tree toward the lake edge and I lost it. The CONNECTICUT was my lucky 13th warbler species of the morning. Encountering two lone birders as I walked back to the parking lot, I mentioned the sighting and sent them on their way to see if their luck was as good as mine had been. A male WILSON's WARBLER at the dam was the second best warbler of the morning. There were several nice mixed warbler flocks at various places along the trail. A BARRED OWL at Cane Bridge looked as if it was waiting to spy a fish breakfast. An OSPREY flew low over the lake in the early morning, and a single PIED-BILLED GREBE was diving for food. I saw or heard 4 PHILADELPHIA VIREOs. With the cool weather and a number of migrants it was an excellent morning.
