Radnor Lake State Natural Area Davidson Co., TN 2014 April 23 Returning from a trip to Dauphin Island, AL this past weekend, I was eager to see what had already passed through and arrived in Tennessee. Wednesday morning I birded with Jan Shaw and Sharon Monroe part way around Radnor Lake. As Jan and I walked up Otter Creek Road, our first of the season ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was there, calling to greet us. For the first time in a while YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was not the high count warbler species. Instead today it was PALM WARBLER by a wide margin, at least a dozen birds, and many of them singing. However, someone forgot to tell the palms that their en masse arrival to TN was late, as Palm Sunday has already been celebrated. Although the morning was a bit slow birdwise considering that a front had passed through, nevertheless highlights included a circling BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 3 BLUE-HEADED VIREOs, and 10 warbler species, including my firstBLACKPOLL of the year in Tennessee and wonderful looks at HOODED WARBLERs. I finished with 42 species for the morning.
Walter S. Davis Blvd Marsh Nashville, Davidson Co., TN Checked the marsh next to the TSU campus for AMERICAN BITTERN, but did NOT find one. Instead, I found my first of the season YELLOW- CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on the far side of the lake. The water level is finally going down but still has a long way to go to reach the level for good shorebirding and so will likely not provide a good stopping place for them this spring.
