Radnor Lake SNA
5-2-15 (5:50 – 10:30 A.M.)
Davidson Co.

Radnor Lake was really hopping this morning as migration is hitting full swing.
Right out of the gate, there was a singing Golden-winged Warbler along the
road just past the parking lot. Once at the dam, and as soon as the sun came
over the ridge and hit the trees, the warblers came alive. Still lots of
Yellow-rumps around (although not nearly as many as last weekend), as well as
Blackpoll, Yellow, Bay-breasted, Nashville, Tennessee, Parula, Yellow-throated,
both Waterthrushes, and a gorgeous Blackburnian in a bare tree right in front
of the old rangers house. A flyover Great Egret was a welcome surprise too.
The best bird of the day was at Cane Bridge, where a Swainson’s Warbler was
singing off to the left of the trail. This is quite possibly the same bird
that was found by Frank Fekel a few days ago. If it’s anything like the
Swainson’s that was found for several consecutive years at Shelby Bottoms
(although I don't believe it has been
seen/heard yet this year), it might stick around for a while.

Long Bridge was pretty active as well, with Blue-winged, Kentucky, and
Nashville warblers, along with four species of vireo (White-eyed, Blue-headed,
Warbling, and Red-eyed). On the way up to Ganier Ridge along “thrush road”
were singing Swainson’s, Wood, and Gray-cheeked thrushes, as well one “wannabe
thrush”…an Ovenbird. Once on the ridge itself, it was only fitting to have two
Cape May Warblers right above the Albert Ganier memorial. Black-throated
Greens and Tennessee’s were really putting on a show with their continuous
singing, and two more Blackburnians were found as well.

Altogether 81 species were found, including 23 species of warblers…full list is
