Radnor Lake State Natural Area Davidson Co. Nashville, TN Friday, 2007 May 11 6:00 - 9:30 am Friday morning I arrived at Radnor at 6 am. The CONNECTICUT WARBLER at the west parking lot Spillway Trail entrance was initially not very cooperative for me, but another birder told me later that he did hear and briefly see it. I walked to Long Bridge and back, hooking up with Jan Shaw on the return leg. The morning was perhaps not quite as birdy as yesterday. There were however, numerous RED-EYED VIREOs and SWAINSON'S THRUSHes. I did end up with 17 warbler species, the same as yesterday, and Jan Shaw had 3 more that I missed, for a total of 20 species, but except for MAGNOLIA and BLACKPOLL, numbers of the other species were at the 1 or 2 bird level. Best warbler flock for me was at Grassy Point, although on our return the Ranger's house near the dam was also pretty good. The MOURNING WARBLER near the deck was not seen or heard. A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and my first WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at Radnor were other highlights. After spending nearly 30 minutes in the early morning listening for the CONNECTICUT but not hearing him, I returned with Jan to the west parking lot at 9 am. We waited perhaps 20-25 minutes before we saw the silent bird in a brush tangle and on the ground eating a butterfly. Jan had an excellent look for her first of the year sighting. This was on the left of the Spillway Trail perhaps 20 yards from the parking lot. He then flew to the other side of the trail and into denser cover. A few minutes later as we were getting into our cars, he finally sang. Mike Bernard emailed me to say that yesterday he had 2 CONNECTICUTs singing simultaneously in the same west parking lot area.
