Radnor Lake State Natural Area Davidson Co. Nashville, TN Monday, 2011 October 10 7:10-9-20am partly cloudy and coolI'd birded so much during the beginning of October that I almost decided to go straight to work this Monday morning. But how could I resist bird watching at Radnor Lake as well as its fall colors on such an excellent morning. Fortunately for me, persistence pays dividends,
and the color was not all on the leaves. The morning began with an adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE. At the dam area I had ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs, a SCARLET TANAGER, and a couple PHILADELPHIA VIREOs. Also in the general area were BLUE-HEADED VIREO and RED-EYED VIREO, 3 EASTERN PHOEBEs and a flock of CEDAR WAXWINGs. Best bird of the morning however, was at the deck on the Lake Trail. After checking the waterfowl, I began looking at the surrounding trees. Suddenly a bird flew directly over my head. I followed it to a nearby branch and was fortunate enough to get brief but excellent looks at a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, my first of the year. This species is a rare migrant in the Nashville area. I finished the morning with 12 species of warblers and a grand total of 47 species. Birds of interest included: Wood Duck 46 Blue-winged Teal 2 Double-crested Cormorant 2 American Coot 2 Northern Flicker 5 E. Wood-Pewee 2 E. Phoebe 3 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Philadelphia Vireo 4 Red-eyed Vireo 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Swainson's Thrush 1 Cedar Waxwing 12 Warblers: Ovenbird 1 Black-and-White 1 Tennessee 2 Nashville 1 Am.
