Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co., TN
Monday, 2011 Oct. 17
7:10-8:40am
cool, partly cloudy

I again enjoyed an early walk at Radnor Lake this Monday morning.
Although I did not walk Otter Creek Road and so had only distant views
of the ducks, it was clear that there was a substantial increase over
numbers on Saturday. Best of the bunch was an early REDHEAD although
RING-NECKED and a couple LESSER SCAUP were also in attendance.
Warbler-wise, YELLOW-RUMPEDs were king but I did find four other
species, the best of which was a male HOODED WARBLER that made itself
known at Long Bridge by its strong chip, but also provided nice looks
as it foraged low to the ground. This bird was 1 day beyond the late
date listed in the "Birds of the Nashville Area, 4th edition." Also
seen at Long Bridge was my first of the season HERMIT THRUSH.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs and a lone BLUE-HEADED VIREO rounded out the
birds of particular interest this morning although I found 40 species
in total.
