March 2, 2006 Mid - Memphis Robco Lake Mud Island Shelby Co. TN I been too busy to check for Purple Martins the last few weeks but they are usually here by now. Today, I was driving down Poplar and had a flyover male. It jiggled my brain out of work mode and I stretched my time to check out the places where I usually see my first Martins in February. At Robco Lake, after a minute or two, I heard their calls tumbling down from high over the transmission towers, there were at least 3 birds enjoying the warmth and bugs. At Mud Island, I had one bird feeding low out over the river. The Mississippi has dropped steadily over the past month, down 20 feet from the last of January, so there are lots of open sand bars but I did not see the White Pelican or the Peregrine Falcon during my short stay. Spring, like the proverbial camel has poked its nose in the tent but our deepest snows in Memphis have been in March;o) Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
