1/24/09 Lynchburg, TN (Moore County) Yippee! I spotted a single Pine Siskin among the Goldfinches and House Finches in my yard this morning as I was making coffee. Alas, I did not get to enjoy if for long because a Cooper's Hawk flew in and scared all the little birds away. I usually like to see the hawk (I consider it a compliment, that it thinks my yard is "birdy" enough to hunt here) but its arrival this morning was really quite inconsiderate. Perhaps the sikin will make another appearance. I had been feeling rather sorry for myself in having no siskins to report (when it seems everyone else in the entire state has oodles of them), because either A) I've not had the time or the opportunity to be home during daylight hours to even see any that might have been here, or B) they have totally rejected my invitation and generous offerings of tasty thistle and sunflower seeds in favor of someone else's yard (in which case my feelings are just plain hurt). So the fact that at least one of the little guys has been so kind as to grace my yard with its presence has lifted my spirits and brightened my day! (And what a lovely day it is, by the way--but colder than it looks!) By the way, thanks to all who offered advice on getting my birds to notice my new upside-down suet feeder. I'll try some of the ideas you all suggested and see if we can start attracting customers. Someone mentioned that it's already working, since it's excluding the birds I don't want--now, if I can just get it to stop excluding all the other birds! Tomorrow: Spring Hill-bound. Pine Siksin today, Snowy Owl tomorrow!
