This morning, 4 energetic middle school students volunteered to come to school (Knox County) 35 minutes early (7:30 am) to join me on a bird walk on school property (not to mention convincing their parents to drive them). The highlight of our morning was watching a PILEATED WOODPECKER feeding its young. This is the same next, that about a month ago some students and I watched the cavity being excavated. Most of the birds that we spotted were "big" birds since students were learning how to use the binoculars. The only warbler we spotted was a YELLOW RUMP WARBLER. On another note from home (Maryville, Blount County): The last time Charlie or I noted PURPLE FINCHES at our feeders was a week ago MOnday, 4/19.
