Whenever I see a phoebe in the wintertime I can't help but wonder
what it is they feed on when insects aren't available. Yesterday I
got at least part of the answer. As I was looking out the window at
the nature center I saw a phoebe pulling shriveled poke berries from
a long dead plant and eating them. Later, as I was cleaning the deck
I noticed a sizeable pile of purple droppings under the light where
the bird roosts.
