Hi folks,

Good news from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Tennessee's 3rd
pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons is back this year. After being
absent from Tennessee for approximately 55 years, 2 nests were found
in 1997; one on a railroad trestle in Chattanooga. The other on
Mount LeConte in Great Smoky Mountains National park. The LeConte
nest was closely monitored by, among others, Dick Dickenson, Bob
Hatcher and JB Owen. one chick hatched the first year at Leconte and
one or more in subsequent years). (I understand that Rick Knight is
the one who first observed this nest?)

Last year a third nesting pair was discovered somewhere in the
vicinity of Green brier Pinnacle. Though the actual nest was never
found (folks were being conservative not to disturb these birds;
behavior was enough to satisfy everyone's curiosity) at least one
juvenile, believed to have fledged from this pair, was seen in the
area.

Both Smoky Mountain nests are located well off trail in extremely
dangerous terrain. Because of the sensitivity of this formerly
endangered species, park personnel are understandably concerned about
any disturbance to the areas near the nest sites. Peregrine Falcons
they are state listed in TN but federally de-listed pending
monitoring.

If anyone happens to observe Peregrines in the park, I'd be happy to
pass the information on. Please do not report specific information
here.

Good day!

Charlie Muise
