The following was forwarded to me from Daniel Jacobson, who asked me to post
this. I got to know Joe well as he participated in the Reelfoot Lake Christmas
Bird Count for many years. He will be greatly missed…
Tennessee Birders,
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, V.
Jowayne "Joe" Stone on Thursday, February 16th after a long and valiant fight
against cholangiocarcinoma. Joe had a life-long interest in the natural world,
pursued a degree in Zoology from UTK and became an avid birder in his twenties.
He was the co-founder of the Nickajack Lake CBC and participated in all three
Chattanooga area CBC's for many years.
Joe moved to Nashville to work with Michael Lee Bierly at the Wood Thrush Shop
and it was there he met Janie Legg who he married on October 20, 1990.
Joe loved birding in Cheatham County (he called it "The County") and covered it
with Jerry Drewry on Spring and Fall counts. For many years, they participated
in the Reelfoot Lake CBC as well as the Hickory-Priest CBC on New Year's Day.
Joe is survived by his wife of 32 and a half years, Janie; two daughters Joanna
and Marissa; two granddaughters, Jane and Josie; several nieces, a nephew and
many cousins as well as a large extended family including his birding friends.
Arrangements will be announced by the Cheatham County Funeral Home of Ashland
City.
May Joe rest in peace!
Respectfully, Kathy & Daniel JacobsonHixson, (Hamilton County) Tennessee
