Pace Point, Henry County October 29, 2013 about 2:00 pm Our family went out to the Big Sandy unit of TN NWR this afternoon, hoping to see the Surf Scoters recently reported by others on this list. Upon arriving at Pace Point, we located the Scoters easily just as they had been described, to the right of the island. We had good looks with a scope. This was a life bird species for all three of us (me, my husband and 7 year old daughter). Many thanks to those who had reported the birds! At Rocky Point we saw 80-something Common Loons, some of which were at the closest range we have ever seen, for fantastic close views. We also enjoyed hearing them call, something we have rarely heard before and then previously it had only been at a great distance.
