Today I was pleased to find quite a good collection of waterfowl all
together near the Old Hickory Lake Dam. At Snow Bunting Peninsula there
were only Ring-billed Gulls, Coots, and Mallards. But across the lake right
next to the large parking lot near the beach (off Cinder Rd.) I had the
following very close and seen from my warm car:
Canada Goose - maybe 100; couldn't find a Cackling
gadwall
wigeon
mallard
shoveler - female
pintail - three males, two females
canvasback - two males, one female
ring-necked duck
lesser scaup
bufflehead
ruddy duck
pied-billed grebe
horned grebe
coot
Strangely I didn't see a single loon. There was a Red-shouldered Hawk on a
telephone pole along Cinder Rd.
I also checked Coleman Pond where Mike Smith and Phillip Casteel had some
good waterfowl on Monday, but it was all frozen. Only Ring-billed Gulls
there on the ice.
Yesterday I checked out Radnor Lake and it is also almost all frozen. A
little open water produced eight species including two Green-winged Teal.
