I visited two sites in Meigs County at Birchwood this morning that both had
large numbers of Sandhill Cranes and of ducks in view on the Hiwassee Wildlife
Refuge. From the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park overlook, I saw large numbers
of ducks including at least these species: Bufflehead, American Wigeon,
Green-winged Teal, Mallard, and Gadwall. Perhaps one thousand Sandhill Cranes
were visible at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge Viewing Area. Ten duck species
were seen. No Buffleheads were seen at the HWR Viewing Area, but the other four
species seen at the CRMP overlook were also at the HWR Viewing Area. In
addition, American Black Duck, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Canvasback,
Redhead, and Ring-necked Duck were also seen in the slough at the Viewing Area.
There were hundreds of ducks there, including the largest number of Northern
Pintails that I have ever seen on the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.
