January 7 & 8, 2010 Gibson, Obion, & Lake Counties I've been out and about here in Northwest Tennessee the last couple of days and here are a few of the highlights. January 7 - Lake & Obion Counties I spent most of the day in Obion & Lake Counties. Reelfoot Lake is frozen over for the most part. I only saw a couple of small patches of open water and there just were not many birds around. I did see a concentration of 10 Bald Eagles sitting out on the ice on the south part of the lake. There was some open water in the washout area and there was a nice group of about 50 Hooded Mergansers there. I saw nothing on the Mississippi River but a handful of Ring-billed Gulls. I had great leisurely views of a Cooper's Hawk hunting in downtown Tiptonville. Two very big flcoks of Snow Geese were seen in the distance just south of Tiptonville. January 8 - Gibson County I spent the day today here in Gibson County. At Gibson County Lake east of Trenton most of the lake was frozen over but there were a couple of patches of open water on the northwest side of the lake. Here I found a concentration of over 400 Mallards, 5 CACKLING GEESE, 50 Canada Geese, 12 Ring-necked Ducks, 6 Hooded Mergansers, 4 Gadwall, 2 American Wigeon, 1 Northern Pintail, and 3 Lesser Scaup. There was also 1 Pied-billed Grebe and 1 Ruddy Duck way out in the lake in a small patch of open water. On Charlie Butler Road in SW Gibson County the adult dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk that I first found two winters ago has returned again for the 3rd straight year. At my house in the Mt. Orange community just west of Trenton my feeders have been very active for the last few days and I've had a couple of Purple Finches mixed in with the hordes of House Finches. I've had lots of Am. Goldfinches as well but no Pine Siskins or Red-breasted Nuthatches yet. I've also had up to 20 White-crowned Sparrows with a few White-throated Sparrows mixed in. Dark-eyed Juncos, N. Cardinals, and Blue Jays have been visiting the feeders in big numbers as well. Red-bellied & Downy Woodpeckers have been fighting the N. Mockingbird for the suet feeders.
