April 18th and 19th
Victor and I spent the last two days in Northwest Tennessee camping and
birding. Except for a short stop at the Highway 88 Bottoms in Lauderdale
County and a few short stops along the Great River Road in Dyer County we
spent most of our time in Lake County (as usual) covering all our favorite
haunts. We had 153 species for the weekend with 20 species of shorebirds
and 16 species of warblers, several of which were first of season arrivals.
Here are several that I figure are worth reporting on here.
VIRGINIA RAIL, 1 seen at Robinson Bayou
SORA, 7 in total at scattered locations around Black Bayou
BLACK BELLIED PLOVER, 1 at Robinson Bayou, FOS
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 383 at scattered locations with the majority at
Robinson Bayou.
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 68
HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 3 FOS at Robinson Bayou present until dusk tonight when
they were seen heading NW.
MARBLED GODWIT, 1 FOS at Robinson Bayou yesterday and we couldn’t find it
today.
WHITE RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 FOS showed up at Robinson Bayou today.
SHORT BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 FOS at Robinson Bayou.
LONG BILLED DOWITCHER, 4,270, another State high count with 450 in Dyer
County, 1500 at Robinson Bayou and 2200 (individual count) at the Rice
Fields near Black Bayou, as well as a few scattered birds. This was the
most numerous shorebird on the weekend which is a first for me.
WILSON’S PHALAROPE, 6, at Robinson Bayou, Black Bayou and Dyer County.
AMERICAN BITTERN, 1 at the wheelchair section of Black Bayou.
Both NIGHT HERONS at Black Bayou.
WHITE FACED IBIS, FOS, 5 on Chic Road in Dyer County and 1 flyover at
Robinson Bayou.
PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 hanging around Robinson Bayou.
GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, FOS
BANK SWALLOW, FOS
SEDGE WREN, 1 at the rice fields adjacent to Black Bayou.
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, FOS at Robinson Bayou.
LECONTE’S SPARROW, 3 lingering at the rice fields adjacent to Black Bayou.
LARK SPARROW, FOS pair in Tiptonville
LINCOLN’S SPARROW, Black Bayou
BOBOLINK, FOS male on Chic Road in Dyer County
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, FOS scattered throughout.
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, FOS, 2 at Black Bayou.
NASHVILLE WARBLER, 1 at Black Bayou
AMERICAN REDSTART,1 FOS
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1 at Black Bayou
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 3 FOS
