Weather today (Friday, October 9th) was constantly changing, making for great birding. Sun, strong wind, rain, etc. My son and I went to Nickjack Dam and returned to Chattanooga via Hwy 41 and Raccoon Mtn. Nickajack yielded some excitement with a huge, beautiful Golden Eagle spotted flying over the trees then diving low over the field that is to the right just as you reach the dam. We also had about 50 kettling black and turkey vultures playing in the wind. They would rise high on a thermal, set into a dive for about 1/2 mile, then let the wind blow them back to their starting point and do it all over again. As we left going up Hwy 41 we spotted a Bald Eagle low over the highway. Water fowl were not too impressive with 100+ coots, about 25 Pied-billed Grebes, 7 DC Cormorants, 6 mallards, numerous great blue herons. At Raccoon Mtn we had 2 bald eagles and 2 broad-winged hawks just before the rain set in for about 30 minutes. The 2 BE's seemed to be resident birds while the bw's were migrating. All in all a great day out in Marion County. -------------------------- Bill Holt Chattanooga, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
