Dear Partner in Bird Conservation, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) is pleased to announce the update of the Partners in Flight (PIF) Species Assessment Database (version 2005), and the accompanying Partners in Flight Handbook on Species Assessment. The database and handbook are both available through our website at http://www.rmbo.org/pif/pifdb.html. These materials replace the previous versions released in 2001, and follow the criteria used in the North American Landbird Conservation Plan (Rich et al. 2004). The database contains updated biological assessment scores and related data for all landbirds in the continental United States and Canada, at both the global scale and for Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs). Updated scores were generated by the PIF Science Committee through an objective, rule-driven process that gathers complex biological data from a variety of sources and simplifies these into easy-to-interpret numerical scores. These scores and supporting information are maintained in a single location so that biological vulnerability and conservation concern can be compared across a large array of species at one time. The revised PIF Handbook on Species Assessment details the scientific process behind each score and explains how PIF uses species assessment in conservation planning at both global and regional scales. Through the generous support of our partners, RMBO maintains these resources and makes them available at no cost to the public through our website http://www.rmbo.org/pif/pifdb.html. The PIF Species Assessment Process and database have been eagerly sought and used for a huge variety of assessment and planning purposes for many years now. We invite you to peruse the enhanced interactive website, look through the handbook to better understand the assessment process, and make use of these valuable tools as you do your part for the conservation of birds in North America. Sincerely, Arvind Panjabi Partners in Flight Database Manager Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Fort Collins office: 230 Cherry St. suite 150 Fort Collins, CO 80521-2002 970-482-1707 www.rmbo.org ~ check us out!
