For those Tennessee birders who might want to see what is happening in our neighbor to the southeast, check out the following. The announcement is from the Georgia bird listserve (you can access most of the birding listserves at http://birdingonthe.net/birdmail.html). Tennessee birders are welcome to participate in the Name That Bird! Contest. (for Tennessee butterfly enthusiasts...note the photo of a Green Comma taken this past June (look in the Photo Gallery)...and consider joining me in a trip down there next year to look for some) ********************************** Subject: New Georgia Birding Website! From: Ken Blankenship <kenhblankenship AT COMCAST.NET> Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 16:59:00 -0400 Hello GABO'ers! I am happy to announce the opening of a new website I have been working on - www.wingsoverga.com This is a developing project, and will always be improving (in particular, navigating the pages will get better). It is at least ready to go for now and I hope you will find it enjoyable and useful! The purposes are... 1) Name That Bird! Contest Yes, it's baaaaaaack :) If you were not around for the first incarnation, this is a fun Georgia bird photo identification quiz. It will renew every couple weeks, and the winner will receive a copy of "The Annotated Checklist of Georgia Birds" courtesy of the Georgia Ornithological Society (www.gos.org). The first contest is open now - visit the site to read about how it works and enter! 2) Birding Directions Database This is the most in-depth part of the website with 80+ locations so far, and I hope it gets much, much better as more folks send me information on their local birding spots. The inspiration here was that when I would plan a birding itinerary in a particular region, I would first (of course) consult Beaton's "Birding Georgia," and then search GABO Archives. Sometimes it would take quite a while to get to the nitty-gritty of directions and DeLorme coordinates amidst the many reports and posts containing the search terms. My purpose is to bring directions to many lesser-known birding sites together in ONE PLACE for people to access. Many of them feature tips on particular species and how to bird the area. I hope this will become a useful resource for Georgia birders - let me know what you think, and in the future please feel free to refer to the website if you report from an area that is featured in the database (hey - then you don't have to write out the directions every time!). Visit the site to read more! 3) Photo Gallery Just what it sounds like. This page is under construction as I figure out how to use thumbnails, but there are some neat images up for starters. Right now it isn't very user-friendly if you have a slower internet connection because the (only 12) photos are full-size. I will figure this out eventually, so I can put up lots of quick-loading thumbnails that will pop up larger versions. I would love to feature photos by other birders like you, so visit the site to send me your artwork! Please come on over and explore the website, and enjoy!
