On Thursday 6/04/09 I also went by Natchez Trace State Park in Henderson County for an hour and a half in a cloudy mid-day. I was amazed at the diversity of woodland birds, especially warblers, at this coastal plain location in June. All told I had a dozen species of warblers, plus some other surprising finds. A partial list: Northern Parula 11 Yellow-throated Warbler 5 Pine Warbler 17 Prairie Warbler 1 Black-and-white Warbler 4 Prothonotary Warbler 2 Worm-eating Warbler 1 Swainson's Warbler 1 Ovenbird 1 Kentucky Warbler 13 Hooded Warbler 7 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Scarlet Tanager 2 One each of the Black-and-whites and Summer Tanagers were seen as well as being heard singing. The Worm-eating was heard only, but heard well. This bird along with the apparently regular spot for Worm-eatings on my BBS route in Obion County makes me wonder if this species might be more widely spread in west TN than is generally recognized. Its song is distinctive, but could still be easily overlooked among the abundant Chipping Sparrows and Pine Warblers. It's worth giving a closer listen for it. I just covered roadsides, making frequent listening stops, entering the park from the south on Chislom Rd. and exiting to the west on Wildwood Rd., with a pass by Browns Creek Lake.
