Edgar Evins State Park DeKalb County, TN Saturday 16 June 2007 - Eleven birders braved the heat today for a three-hour hike in the reasonably cool deep woods along the Millennium Trail at Edgar Evins State Park on Center Hill Lake. Deep woods birding often means hearing a lot more than seeing and while we did hear lots of Cerulean Warblers, we also got excellent looks at one foraging mid level. We also saw a fledgling Louisiana Waterthrush as well and an Acadian Flycatcher flying to a nest carrying food in its bill. There were many Red-eyed Vireos as well as both Summer and Scarlet Tanagers. Wood Thrushes were often heard singing in the background along our hike. We saw several Hooded and Kentucky Warblers. Other birds observed included Northern Parula, Worm-eating Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, Downy, Red-bellied, Pileated Woodpeckers, Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Phoebe, White-breasted Nuthatch and Brown Thrasher. We totaled 36 species. A nice way to spend a hot summer day.
