Obion & Gibson Counties

The Rough-legged Hawk was still present today on Hwy 45W between Kenton & Union
City. I ran into Scott Somershoe & Steven Zipperer up there and they were able
to get some good views of the bird as it sat on the crossarm of an electric
pole beside the highway and then it dove to the short grass just beside the
highway after something (a vole or mouse, I suppose). I hope this bird
continues to stick around and that it doesn't get hit by a car on this busy
highway.

Just a short ways away on Garrett Sawmill Road I had a small flock of 9 Lapland
Longspurs fly by calling and rattling while I was watching a first year male
Northern Harrier harassing a Red-tailed Hawk. There are numerous Red-tailed
Hawks and Northern Harriers in the area. I left this area and headed east and
had a Loggerhead Shrike on Simmons Road. I again saw no Sandhill Cranes at
Hop-In Refuge or in any of the surrounding fields.

There is a large crow roost just northwest of Trenton in Gibson County and
there are lots of crows in the area and I've been hearing several Fish Crows
lately. I heard at least 5 Fish Crows yesterday while standing in my yard
watching a flock of crows passing. I've still got several Pine Siskins and a
Purple Finch or two at the feeders and White-crowned Sparrows have now showed
up in good numbers. I had 10-15 in the yard this morning.

Good birding,
