Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Nashville-Davidson County, TN

06 May 2009

Three very intrepid birders, Linda Kelly, Scott Block, and Danny Danielson,
plus myself, met in the west parking lot at Radnor Lake this morning in the
steady cold rain. We may have outnumbered the birds.

We did hear a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH near the creek (now a rushing stream)
which passes under the road on the way from the parking lot up to the dam
road. At first, it sounded like the bird was on the right side up on the
ridge. We wondered if the bird knew something we did not know regarding
rising water levels! But the ambient noise of rain and rapid stream had
fooled us-subsequent song indicated the bird was actually on the left down
near the stream.

We also saw a GREEN HERON flying out low over the lake. Other lake skimmers
were NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS. Then two CANADA GEESE with goslings
marched across the dam road, keeping an eye on us. We heard an occasional
ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and a SCARLET TANAGER. And of course we saw and heard
several NORTHERN CARDINALS and CAROLINA WRENS.

All in all, it was a better day to have a second cup of coffee in a dry
location, but it was fun to be out in the rain and see water levels and
movement not experienced at Radnor for awhile.

If you'd like a "rain check", we'll try this again next Wednesday May 13 at
7:30am in the West Parking Lot at Radnor.
