Wednesday evening around 10:00, we heard some strange calls that seemed to be coming from the trees uphill from our house. They were hoarse and guttural like "craaaaack" and sometimes softer, almost questioning "querks" and other raspy sounds. There were at least two animals making the noises because the sound came from more than one place, and they seemed to be answering each other. We looked on the Cornell web site and found some recordings that sounded similar for both species of night heron. Could that be what we heard?
